Tukuze Agroforestry Project is a carbon credit funded agroforestry project developed specifically for Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Taita Taveta Counties. The project aims to plant 53,000 hectares with cashew and moringa trees, boosting local farmer income, industries and food security.
The Empowering Farmers Foundation is a regional not-for-profit operating in Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi. EFF works with the private sector and public administration to improve the incomes, food security and climate resilience of smallholder farming households. EFF has a large footprint in the Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Taita Taveta regions with over 250 employees implementing the Tukuze Agroforestry Project.

Tukuze means “Let’s Grow” in Kiswahili. It’s a tried-and-tested cashew-moringa agroforestry project, that supports farmer incomes and soil health while increasing above-ground carbon capture. The project will last 40 years.

With support from EFF, according to anti-deforestation rules, clear the land to planting trees.
With support of EFF, prepare planting holes according to Tukuze agroforestry design.
Tree maintenance according to project recommendations to maximize production and carbon storage.
If necessary, provide emergency irrigation during droughts to keep the trees alive.
Tukuze supports with market linkages, but marketing is the responsibility of the farmer.
With support of EFF: set-up adequate tree protection/fencing measures against livestock and other threats.
Planting cover crops and other farming activities are encouraged, but need to align with agroforestry system of Cashew and Moringa.
